Miskolc has joined the DiningCity National Restaurant Week with 9 restaurants

National Restaurant Week will take place between March 12 and 29, during which hundreds of outstanding Hungarian restaurants will offer special-price menus to their guests. A total of 230 featured restaurants are participating in the nationwide program—in addition to more than 160 Budapest establishments, nearly 70 restaurants outside the capital have also joined. Participating restaurants will offer three-course lunch or dinner menus at a uniform, fixed price.

This year’s event is a source of particular pride for Miskolc, as it has the highest number of participating restaurants among provincial cities; in fact, the region leads the way in a comparison of counties, with Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County contributing the most—a total of 14 restaurants—to the national initiative.

At most restaurants, guests can choose a menu starting at 6,900 forints; many other establishments offer a premium menu for 8,900 forints, while prices for exclusive menus start at 10,900 forints. Some venues also offer dishes made with special ingredients, which can be sampled for a small additional fee.

The city’s presence clearly demonstrates how much of a major player Miskolc has become on the domestic gastronomic scene in recent years. The program includes numerous restaurants that domestic gastronomic publications rank among the best in the country, with several holding Michelin recommendations or Bib Gourmand ratings.

The secret to the success of Miskolc’s restaurants lies in their strong connection to the Bükk Mountains. Ingredients from the Bükk Mountains and the surrounding countryside have long defined the city’s culinary character. Forest plants, mushrooms, game, produce from local farmers, and traditional Bükk flavors appear in modern forms in the kitchens of many restaurants.

The use of local ingredients serves as both a guarantee of quality and a commitment to sustainability. The short supply chain reduces the environmental impact of transportation while strengthening the region’s economy and communities. For Miskolc’s restaurants, therefore, involving local producers and preserving regional flavors is of paramount importance.

Sustainability has brought international success to Miskolc

Miskolc’s gastronomic development is well illustrated by the prestigious international recognition that the Forest to Fork – Forest Gastroexpress experience program received on March 4 at the Green Destinations TOP100 Story Awards competition, in the “Thriving Communities” category. The Miskolc initiative, which took the top spot on the podium, proved to be the best among a strong international field.

What makes the program unique is that it combines the natural treasures of the Bükk forests with local gastronomy. During the experience, participants can explore the world of forest ingredients while also experiencing a practical example of sustainable tourism.
